U-T San Diego: School goes green for playground fix
May 23, 2012 – Wanting to spark her students’ curiosity about the environment and deciding her school’s playground desperately needed a makeover, Palomar Elementary School teacher Mary Anne Arabia took one step in the hopes of accomplishing both goals. She entered a sweepstakes contest — and won.
Arabia and her fifth grade class were named the grand prize winners of the national “Spruce Up Your School” sweepstakes, receiving a $5,000 grant to be used toward the greening of their play areas. Discovery Education and Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) presented Arabia and Palomar Elementary with a check earlier this month during a ceremony at the school.
The national sweepstakes is part of the TurfMutt program, a digital curriculum designed to encourage kids to protect the environment around them and foster appreciation of green space in their communities.
