Contest for Students at Schools with Grades K-5 Announced, Entry Deadline April 6, 2016 ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Learning how to take care of the planet and studying science just got more fun with TurfMutt, an environmental stewardship and education program for kids, teachers and families. TurfMutt announces today its annual “Be a Backyard Superhero” contest, which awards a $5,000 grant to improve two winning schools’ green spaces, and the addition of new in-classroom materials for grades K to 5, including a new digital storybook titled “The West Coast Mission,” an online climate change game, and lesson plans for teachers at [.....]
Children in grades K-5 have the power to improve the outdoor green spaces at their schools by participating in the “Be a Backyard Superhero” essay contest with Scholastic. They can enter the contest by writing and illustrating a story. The contest is part of the TurfMutt environmental stewardship and education program – where children learn they can be backyard superheroes by taking care of green spaces, inspired by TurfMutt and his friends, the Outdoor Powers. May 23, 2012 – Wanting to spark her students’ curiosity about the environment and deciding her school’s playground desperately needed a makeover, Palomar Elementary School teacher Mary Anne Arabia took one step in the hopes of accomplishing both goals. She entered a sweepstakes contest — and won. Arabia and her fifth grade class were named the grand prize winners of the national “Spruce Up Your School” sweepstakes, receiving a $5,000 grant to be used toward the greening of their play areas.
